Before the weather gets too warm, the ground too soft and swampy, and things begin turning leafy and green (including poison ivy), Uncle Tommy thought I shoud see the other side of Meadow Island. The part where there are no bay houses. He took me, my mom and my cousin Ed for a “tour” recently and it was wild. Apparently there had been a hotel on the island in the mid-1800’s, called New Inlet Hotel. There is a memorial with many names from 2 different families on it left in the brush. One son, at age 17 was struck by lightning and died there! We don’t know exactly how people got there, how long the hotel operated or why these families chose to drag the heavy stone marker out there. We dug up some old plates and bottles that must have come from the hotel. My uncle is going to try and find out some history on the place…..sounds like a setting for a story to me!!
